Liquid Penetrant Examinition Procedure

  • Purpose
  1. This procedure provides guidance and acceptance standards for color contrast visible dye penetrant examination of weldments, stainless steel carbon and low alloy steel materials.
  2.  This procedure consists of english versons.
  • Scope 
 This procedure is applicable to the visible solvent removable penetrant systems. Liquid penetrant examination is used to detect discontinuities that are opened to the surface of nonporous metals. Liquid penetrant examination may be performed at the any stages of production in accordance with the written specifications or customer contract requirements.

Procedure Qualification shall be conducted when any change of essential variable stated in table T - 621; changes of nonessential variable stated in table T - 621 need not re-qualification of written procedure. All changes of essential or nonessential variables from the value, specified by the written procedure, it shall require revision of, or an addendum to, the written procedure.

Result of Liquid Penetrant Examination Required by the code shall be reported on PT. MSS Penetrant Test report form.

  • Definitions
Developer : a material that is applied to the test surface to accelerate bleed out and enhance the contrast of the indications.

Penetrant : a solution or suspension of dye.

Footcandle ( fc ) : the illumination on surface, 1 ft in area, on which is uniformly distributed a flux of 1 lm ( lumen ).
